A history from the pen of Henry F. Millmann written in 1955.
Henry Herman Millmann was born August 18, 1811 in the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States about the year 1829. For several years prior to that time he obtained a passport each fall to go to Holland in order to dig peat when the peat bogs were frozen solid. When he approached the age for serving in the army he did not return to Hanover, but stowed away on a Dutch ship bound for America. Thus he got to Baltimore. Being a deserter he could not return to his mother country. In Baltimore he obtained a job as a common laborer with a construction crew that was building the B and O railroad to Cincinnati. When the crew had completed the roadbed he had to look for other work at Cincinnati. He got a job on a brickyard and so it came about that he became a brickmaker.
In Cincinnati he became acquainted with an immigrant girl, also from Hanover, Anna Juette and they were married about the year 1845.
They found other Catholics in Cincinnati and learned to know a priest by the name of John Martin Henni. Father Henni was moved by the missionary spirit and in 1843 decide to go to Milwaukee, at that time a thriving frontier community of about 15,000 inhabitants. Father Henni, who later on became the first bishop and archbishop of the Milwaukee diocese induced a number of his Cincinnati parishioners to join him in the adventure. Henry Herman Millman, his young wife and baby, Henry J., moved to Milwaukee in 1848. In the year precious he had purchased ten acres of land, suitable for a brick yard, for the price of $100.00, at approximately W. Mineral and South 14th Sts. He operated a brickyard at this site until about 1881 when he retired as a brickmaker. He then laid out his property in lots, which he sold, and for convenience sake became a notary public. He also became interested in politics and was the first president of the Board of public Works of Milwaukee.
During the years of his retirement from the arduous work of running a brickyard and the time of his death he and his wife had a very happy evening of life. Henry Herman Millmann died April 16, 1890 and his wife died in August 1891. Grandpa and Grandma Millmann had five children: Henry J., Charles, Mary (Mrs. Lochem), Frank and Bernard. The latter two died during childhood.
When Grandpa Millmann was born the family name was Muehlmann and he went by that name until he started to work for the proprietor of the brickyard in Cincinnati. When he received his first wage the boss said to him that it was his observation that German mane often had a definite meaning and asked what Muehlmann meant in the German language. Grandpa explained that it was a man who worked in a mill (He probably had in mind a flour mill rather than an iron mill). Therefore the practical Yankee boss wrote o a slip of paper “Millmann” and told Grandpa to use that word as his name in this country. Grandfather having no real property in bonds and stocks that was very simple matter. Thus it was that the name “Millmann” came into being. It will be noted that double “n” ending was retained indication the German origin of the name.
Grandpa Millmann was a man of stern Catholicity. He was one of the founders and a lifetime member of Holy Trinity church. He also took a lively interest in the beginnings of St. Francis Seminary. Thus he became well acquainted with Dr. Joseph Salzmann the promoter and first rector of the seminary.
Grandpa Millmann began making brick in Milwaukee in 1848. When the seminary was built a few years later he furnished the brick for the seminary building, at this time (1955) over a century old. He also supplied the brick for the Holy Trinity church.
When Grandpa hired men to work in his brickyard he was obliged to furnish room and board to some of the unmarried men. Consequently, he built a roomy two story house and later on a lean to. One can imagine that Grandma was a busy woman. A photograph of the old house is still extant. It shows the house, Grandpa and Grandma and several of the children. Grandpa and Grandma were people of sterling character who gave an example of right living and were an asset to the community. Their bodies rest in peace in Holy Trinity cemetery.4
