The Twentieth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was organized and its final muster into the service of the United States completed at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin August 23, 1862. The regiment left the state August 30 and joined General Herron's Brigade at Rollo, MO, September 6, and was sent on a march to southwestern Missouri, participating in the campaign then being conducted against the Confederates by the Army of the Frontier in southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. It took part in the battle of Prairie Grove, AR December 7, 1862.
The Twentieth continued in active service in southwestern Missouri until June following, when the regiment was transferred to Vicksburg and took its place in the trenches June 15, 1863, remaining a part of the besieging forces until the surrender July 4, following. After Vicksburg, the regiment was in service on various expeditions in Mississippi and Louisiana, including one to Natchez, Port Hudson and Morganza. Later in the year the Twentieth accompanied the Texas expedition which left New Orleans Oct. 26, 1863, disembarking at Brazos, Santiago, TX and going on duty at or near Brownsville, TX, on the Rio Grande, where it remained until the following August. During this time it participated in many expeditions, including a two-day excursion across the Rio Grande into Mexico, January 12-14, 1864. The following obituary was printed in The Watertown Daily Times on 2 Aug 1921:
Peter Nimm Dies Early This Morning, Civil War Veteran, Death Occurred at Home of His Daughter in Racine--Body will be Brought Here for Burial.
The death of Peter Nimm, a former resident of Watertown and veteran of the Civil War occurred in the home of his daughter in Racine this morning. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. He was a resident of this section many years and was one of the best known farmers of the town of Watertown, but removed to this city about fifteen years ago.
Mr. Nimm was born near Sieburg, Germany, January 19, 1840, and came to this section in 1852 with his parents. During the following winter, although only a boy of 12, he worked on the Milwaukee Watertown railroad then being built west from Lake Michigan. During the following years until he enlisted, he worked on farms near Princeton and Ripon and upon his return from service was united in wedlock with Gertrude Hanley, who died eleven years ago. He is survived by three sons, John of Wood County, Nicholas, this city, and Joseph of Watertown, and three daughters, Mrs. Anthony Duffy, Racine, Mrs. Catherine Schermerhorn, Milwaukee, Mrs. Clara Wells, Tennessee, One sister, Miss Simon Molzahn of this city also survives.
Mr. Nimm was a man of fine character, and general disposition which attracted to him many friends and during his long residence in this section was greatly esteemed.
Mr. Nimm was a veteran of the Civil war. He enlisted at Ripon near where he had been working on a farm August 6, 1862, for a term of three years. He was wounded in the right arm on June 21, 1863, at the siege of Vicksburg while on fatigue duty, digging rifle pits. His discharge shows that he enlisted in Co. H, Twentieth Wisconsin Infantry and was on detail duty when mustered out at the expiration of his term of service.
The body will be brought to Watertown for burial.6
Peter Nümm died on 2 August 1921 at Watertown at age 81.15

"In the year 1835 on June 2 at 10 a.m. came to me - Franz Strunk - mayor of Hennef - Peter Nümm, 28 years old, born in Dondorf, goverment of Cöln, profession carpenter, living in Dondorf, government of Cöln, son of the late Heinrich Nümm, profession carpenter, and of late Anna Helena Schmitz, farmer's wife in Dondorf, and Anna Maria Alfter, 26 years old, born in Weldergoven, government of Cöln, daughter of the late Sebastian Alfter, profession farmer, living in Weldergoven, government of Cöln, and of Anna Fraziska Küffer, farmer's wife in Weldergoven.
