The following history of the Zins family apeared in The Zins Family Genealogy by Robert R. Zins: In the United States there seems to be five main families with the Zins name.
      1. The first Zins family settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s, part of the Pennsylvania Dutch immigration, which is actually not Dutch, but Deutsch (German).
     2. The second Zins family came from Alsace Lorrain, France, the German speaking border region which has been traded back and forth, over the centuries, between Germany and France. Adam Zins, with his wife Magdalena Wagner and their three sons, Christian, Jakob, and Peter, departed Gross-Rederching, in the Lorraine area, after the 1848 revolution which swept throughout most of Europe. It is believed that they departed from La Harve, France and immigrated to the United States through the port of New Orleans (research revealed that in February 1849 a female of 40 years, by the name of M. Zins, landed in New Orleans). Perhaps they then sailed up the Mississippi River to the Ohio River and then traveled Eastward until they reached Cincinnati, Ohio. They then went on to Franklin County, Indiana where they were farmers. Jakob Zins was a Civil War veteran with the 13th Indiana Infantry. Around the turn of the century many of the Zins family members moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Other members or their children moved on to other areas of the country. The genealogical historians for this family are Dians (Zins) Swing, Cincinnati, Ohio, the great-grand-daughter of Christian and Robert R. Zins, Newport News, Virginia, the grand-son of Jakob.
The Adam Zins family immigrated from Alsace Lorraine, France. That territory is occupied by a larger groups of German speaking peoples who originated from the Alemmanic tribe, which settled in the areas of Eastern France (Alsace Lorraine), Western Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The question always arises, "Are the descendants if Adam and Magdalena Zins French or German?" One could answer: Make your own choice. But we seem to be derived from the Germanic tribe of the Alemannics, the descendants of which live in all four of the mentioned countries.
Another Zins came from the Lorraine area of France and may be related to Adam Zins. George Zins was born in Saarburg, Lorraine, just south of Gross-Rederching, and immigrated to the US in 1842. First he went to Illinois and then went on to California where he ran a brick manufacturing company. Even today, in California, one can find bricks with the name ZINS stamped on them. He was married to Dorothea Mueller and had two children but his children died prior to having any children and his family line did not continue after his death.
     3. A third Zins family moved into the Cincinnati, Ohio area around the turn of the century, they came from Germany at least 50 years later than the original Zins family. This family is believed to have originated in Munich, Germany.
     4. A fourth Zins family arrived in Evansville, Indiana after the Civil War. They are also from Germany. Patriarch of this family is Nicholas Zins.
     5. A fifth Zins family arrived in Neu Ulm, Minnesota shortly before the Civil War. Anton Zins and Elizabeth Burgs Zins left their home in Kilburg, Germany, in May of 1857. They, along with their five sons reached the United States on June 21, 1857. Mary Ann Zins is the genealogical historian for this family.
The Zins family name seems to be concentrated in four main areas in Europe. In Germany, (1) in the Rhineland area near Bitburg, Kilburg, and Koln, (note: while in Germany in August 1990, this writer checked the telephone book for the Bitburg and Killburg areas. I found no Zins family name. There are a few Zens family names, which could possibly be derived from Zins.) (2) in the Palatine (Pfaltz) area, South of Kaiserslauten, in Homburg, and (3) in East Prussia from a town called Pillupoenen and from Berlin. (4) The fourth group is from the Lorraine area of France, probably from the town of Gross-Rederchingen, which is located just a few miles from the German border South of Saarbruecken. I believe that all of these four main groups are related, with the possible exception of that located in Berlin and East Prussia, and that a connection can be established if the documentation can be located.4
