Fond du Lac friends and acquaintances of T. C. Downs, local attorney, were shocked yesterday to learn of his death which occurred at 2:45 o'clock in the afternoon at St. Anthony's Hospital, Chicago. The body is due to arrive in this city this afternoon. Details of Mr. Downs' death will be found on p. 5:
Former District Attorney Fails to Rally After Being Stricken; Body Being Brought Home From Chicago.
Thomas C. Downs, former district attorney and former member of the Library board, died at St. Anthony's Hospital, Chicago, at 2:45 o'clock Monday afternoon. His death, following an operation at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday night brought sincere sorrow to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Fond du Lac. The news received by telephone yesterday afternoon spread quickly. Expressions of sorrow over his death and sympathy were heard on every side.
Mr. Downs accompanied by his wife and two children, Thomas and Genevieve, drove to Chicago in their car last Tuesday for a visit at the home of Frank Downs, brother of the deceased. It was a combined business and pleasure trip as Mr. Downs had planned to take in a few of the ball games scheduled last week.
At noon Wednesday, while at the residence of his brother he was taken suddenly ill. A physician was called and his removal to the hospital was found to be an immediate necessity. At 9:30 o'clock Wednesday night Mr. Downs submitted to an operation to relieve strangulated hernia.
His condition became aggravated suddenly and unexpectedly. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, indications were that Mr. Downs would survive the ordeal and his condition was reported to be satisfactory. Monday morning Dr. A. C. Dana, Dr. S. E. Gavin, and A. G. Dana were called to his bedside. They arrived about half and hour before he passed away. He was unconscious.
The body is expected to arrive in Fond du Lac either at 4:20 o'clock of 6:45 o'clock this evening.
Thomas C. Downs was born Nov. 4, 1876, at Delavan, Wis. He attended school in his home city and then entered Marquette College, now Marquette University. He was graduated from Marquette in 1897. The fall of that year he entered Georgetown University at Washington D.C., taking a course of study in the post graduate department as well as the law department. He was admitted to the practice of law in Wisconsin in 1899. In 1900 he graduated from Georgetown University, finishing in both departments. In the fall of 1900, Mr. Downs came to Fond du Lac and entered the office of Maurice McKenna. He continued the practice of law with Mr. McKenna until November 1, 1906. He then engaged in practice for himself.
Mr. Downs was married to Miss Leona Dana, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George P. Dana, June 26, 1907. The deceased leaves his wife and two children, Genevieve and Thomas; also one sister, Mrs. Prasch, of Delavan, also four brothers, John and James Downs, of Delavan, Rev. M. E. Downs of Whitewater and Frank Downs of Chicago.
The deceased was a member of Fond du Lac Council No. 664, Knights of Columbus; Fond du Lac Lodge No. 57 B.P.O.E. and the Fond du Lac County Bar association and for a number of years past in addition to his private law practice has been secretary of the Henry Boyle estate, He served also as member of the Library board.
Mr. Downs was divorce counsel for Fond du Lac county at the time of his death. He has held the office for a number of years, having discharged the duties of it in a painstaking manner.
On November 1, 1912, Mr. Downs was elected district attorney for Fond du Lac county, an office he creditably filled for two years. He always took a prominent part in the Knights of Columbus activities and for many years was a member of the degree team.
Mr. Downs enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow lawyers, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances shocked by the suddenness of his passing, will mourn his death.
Arrangements for the funeral are to be announced tomorrow.3

At a meeting of the Fond du Lac County Bar association held last night at the office of the president, M. McKenna, plans were made for attending the funeral of Thomas C. Downs, divorce counsel for Fond du Lac county, who died in Chicago Monday afternoon and whose funeral will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at St. Mary's church.
Mr. McKenna will act as chairman of a committee which will prepare a memorial for Mr. Downs to be read in the circuit and county courts of Fond du Lac county. The circuit court memorial will be presented when the November term opens.
Assisting Mr. McKenna on the committee are J.P. McGalloway and L. A. Williams.
Attorney D. F. Blewett was appointed as a committee of one to select a suitable floral tribute.
The Bar association will attend the funeral in a body, visiting the house and taking part in the church service.

A final tribute of respect and esteem participated in by a concourse of people which filled St. Mary's Catholic church to capacity, was paid this morning to Thomas C. Downs, well known attorney, whose sudden death at Chicago last Monday brought sorrow to a large number of Fond du Lac people.
Obsequies were performed at the church at 9 o'clock. The service consisted of a solemn requiem mass at which Rev. M. E. Downs, of Whitewater was the celebrant; Rev. Charles Stehling, D. D., deacon and the reverend J. J. Collins, sub-deacon. The Rev. Father Ullrich was master of ceremonies and the Rev. Francis Finnegan acted as thurifer.
A large number of priests occupied seats in the sanctuary. They were Rev. J. J. Shanahan, Delavan; Rev. J. B. McFarland, Eden; Rev. J. G. Smith, Lake Geneva; Rev. Thomas Pierce, Milwaukee; Rev. J. F. Ryan, Milwaukee; Rev. E. C. McCollow, Rev. N. Neuberger, of Washington D. C.
The honorary bearers were T. E. Ahern, Dr. S. E. Gavin, E. A. Kramer, F. H. Boyle, John P. Galloway and Dr. T. A. Hardgrove. The active bearers were J. T. Harrington, Judge H. M. Fellenz, E. J. Shaw, W. J. Nuss, H. B. Tubbs, and B. A. Husting.
The Rev. Father Downs, who is a brother of the deceased, conducted the commitment service at Calvary cemetery.
The members of the Fond du Lac County Bar association attended the funeral in a body and marched in the cortege. Delegations were also present representing the Knights of Columbus and the Elks.
The floral display was one of the largest seen in the city in some time. At the Downs home, the body rested in state, with the casket banked high with the most beautiful floral tributes. The room was almost filled with choice selections. Baskets overflowed with flowers, while there were many bouquets and set pieces.

Born on March 6, 1911, in Fond du Lac, he was the son of the late Thomas and Leona (Dana) Downs.
He graduated from Notre Dame University in 1933 and Marquette Law School in 1935.
During World War II he worked as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Army Ordinance Board in Washington, D.C. He practiced law for a total of 42 years in Fond du Lac, Rhinelander and Eau Claire. For approximately eight years, he served on the Eau Claire County Board.
He has been a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eau Claire and more recently attended St. Mary's Parish in Peshtigo. Over the years, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving two terms as Grand Knight in Eau Claire order.
Thomas is survived by his daughter, Sharon (a special son-in-law, Loren) Sanderson of Peshtigo; son, Thomas J. Downs of La Crosse, four grandsons, Damian Sanderson of Green Bay, Ryan and Aaron Sanderson of Milwaukee and Shane Sanderson of Eugene, Ore.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eileen (Ellis) Downs of Eau Claire and his sister, Genevieve Tooley of Milwaukee.
Services: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue in Eau Claire. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Eau Claire.
Visitation: Visitation will be from noon until the time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home is serving the family.4
