Simon Gruen, 90, Taken By Death Here On Sunday
Simon Gruen, for nearly 75 years a resident of Watertown, died Sunday morning at his home, 212 North Fourth Street. He was past 90 years of age. Infirmities of old age and a heart attack caused his death, which came peacefully while he slept. He died shortly before 8 o'clock. Mr. Gruen was a native of Germany where he was born March 29, 1840. At the age of 16 years he came to the United States with his widowed mother and shortly after they came to Watertown to make their home. He has since resided here. He was married to Miss Catherine Buck. She preceded him in death 9 years ago. Four daughters survive, Mrs. B Yahna of Grand Forks, N. Dak; Mrs. Paul Hofer of Vally City, N. Dak; Mrs. C.S. Stacy of Chicago; Mrs. Edward Engelhart of this city. There are 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. Gruen was for over a half a century a carpenter here. He was widely known in the community and respected. He was one of the oldest members of St. Henry's Catholic Church and was, until three weeks ago, a regular attendant at services. For a man of his age he was keenly alert and interested in affairs. He enjoyed the friendship of a host of people. The funeral will be held from the residence Wednesday morning with services in St. Henry's Church at 9:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. The rev. Dean F.X. Schwinn will officiate. Friends may call at the home this evening and Wednesday morning up to the time of the funeral to pay their respects.2
