     Miss Hertel was born June 1, 1884 in Watertown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hertel. She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, the Catholic Women's Club, the Watertown Historical Society, the Saturday Club and the Watertown Hospital Auxiliary.
     Surviving are four sisters, Miss Margaret Hertel and Miss Helen Hertel, both of Watertown, Mrs. Charles (Irene) Millmann of Wauwatosa, and Mrs. Samuel (Clara) Slaymaker of Beloit, and two brothers, John of Chicago, Ill., and Andrew of Wauwatosa.
     She was preceded in death by three brothers.⁶

     Had Been In One Pace of Business as Employee and proprietor For Forty Years - Active In Church Work
     Mr. Andrew Hertel, one of the city's best known merchants, succumbed to an illness of nearly two years at 9 o'clock this morning, death taking place at his home in Sixth street.
     Mr. Hertel was born in the town of Ixonia, four miles east of the city August 8, 1857. He attended school in this city, and was also a student at St. Lawrence college at Mt. Calvary and at the Spencerian Business College, Milwaukee.
     His record on a business way was unique in that he was connected with the clothing business as an employee and owner in one building for a period of forty years. It was forty years ago this summer that he entered the employ of the Schwab clothing store, one of the oldest and best known establishments of the kind in the state, which was located in the west half of the store room now occupied by the Hertel&Hoffmann firm, and was with this firm continuously until in 1894, he formed a partnership with Fed Hoffmann and bought out the firm.
     The marriage of Mr. Hertel to Miss Eleanor Molzahn took place May 10, 1881. The widow and ten children survive, as follows: Hugo, John, and Albert Hertel, Chicago; Edward, St. Francis Seminary; Irene, Wautoma; Clara, Beloit; and Stella, Margaret, Helen, and Andrew, at home. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. They are: L. A. Hertel, St. Paul; Gottfried Hertel, town of Watertown; Mrs. M. Fischer, this city; and Mrs. Anna McLaughlin, Milwaukee.
     For the past fifteen years prior to his last illness, Mr. Hertel had been a trustee of St. Henry's Catholic church, serving as treasurer, and he was very active in the work of the church.
     Mr. Hertel was a man who earned and held the respect of his associates in business and all others who came in contact with him in any way. His was a fine, upright character; he was a man of few words but many deeds, as modest and unassuming as he was conscientious, scrupulously honest in all his business dealings and known to all his friends as a kind and loving husband and father who put the best interests of his family first in all things.
     The funeral announcement will be made later.¹⁷

Death of Andrew Hertel; One of Watertown's Most Esteemed Business Men.
     On Thursday, Oct 8 1916, Andrew Hertel, one of Watertown's most successful, enterprising and esteemed business men, passed to the great beyond. He had been ill for nearly two years, and made several trips to Rochester, Minn., and was operated on by the celebrated Mayo Brothers of that place in the hope of bringing about a permanent cure, but all to no purpose. Mr. Hertel was born in the town of Ixonia, about four miles east of this city on August 8, 1857. He received his education in the country schools, the schools of Watertown, and also at St. Lawrence College at Mt. Calvary and at the Specerian Business College, Milwaukee. About forty years ago he entered the employ of the Schwab Clothing store, located in the west hall of the store now occupied by the Hertel & Hoffmann firm. He remained with this firm till 1894, when he and Fred Hoffmann bought out the Schwab firm and continued in business till the present time. On May 10, 1881, he married Miss Eleanor Molzahn, who survives him with ten children as follows: Hugo, John and Albert Hertel, Chicago; Edward, St. Francis Seminary; Irene, Wautoma; Clara, Beloit; and Stella, Margaret, Helen and Andrew, at home. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, L.A. Hertel, St. Paul; Gottfried Hertel, town of Watertown; Mrs. M. Fischer, this city; and Mrs. Anna McLaughlin, Milwaukee. He had been all his life an active member of St. Henry's Congregation and for fifteen years previous to his death he had been a trustee and treasurer thereof. Monday morning at 10 o'clock his funeral took place from St. Henry's church to St. Henry's cemetery, a very large number of people attending to pay their final tribute of respect. In the death of Mr. Hertel, this community has lost one of its very best citizens and his family a husband and father who was ideal in every respect. No one who ever resided here had more friends than Mr. Hertel and in a business way he commanded the confidence of a large trade and all mourn sincerely with his beloved wife and family. He was the embodiment of all the highest qualities that can be found in human nature, and now that he has passed from among us, expressions of heartfelt regret are heard everywhere around the city.⁵

     Services will be held Friday for Andrew Hertel, 88, former promotion manager for the Milwaukee Sentinel.
     Hertel, of Wauwatosa, died of natural causes Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital.
     Hertel was born in Watertown in 1903.
     He became an advertising copywriter for the Milwaukee Journal in 1925, and soon became station manager at WTMJ radio.
     He later managed a Sheboygan radio station and an advertising agency in Chicago, then returned to Milwaukee in 1933.
     On his return, he joined the Sentinel, starting in the advertising service department, then becoming department manager in 1939 and promotion manager in 1941.
     He was involved in numerous Sentinel promotions, including the Milwaukee Sentinel Sports Show since its inception in 1940, and the Home Improvement Show.
     A short time after the Journal Co., now Journal Communications, acquired the Sentinel in 1962, Hertel did some promotion work for the Journal too.
     After retiring in 1973, Hertel became secretary of the Milwaukee NARI Home Improvement Council. He held that job until April 1987.
     Over the years, Hertel served as president of the Milwaukee Advertising Club and the Marquette Minutemen. He was a member of the Milwaukee Press Club and a former director of the International Newspaper Promotion Association. Hertel was a charter member of Christ King Catholic Church, 2604 Swan Blvd., Wauwatosa.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mary Hartman, of Denver.
     Visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Christ King Catholic Church, with services immediately following at 7:30 p.m.
     The family suggested memorials to the Christ King School Fund or another charity.

     Killed
     Andrew H. Hertel, son of Gottfried Hertel, a resident on the West road, was killed in a mine at Central City, Colorado, on Wednesday, October 12, 1898. He was 22 years of age and unmarried. Before leaving here in May last he managed the shoe store of his uncle, Joseph Hertel, on Main street. No particulars of his death have at this writing been received here. He stated in a letter received here the fore part of the week that he was employed in a mine near Central City, working a machine drill, which he said was dangerous work, that in drilling rock when a must hole was met an explosion took place, and it is supposed he met his death by one of these explosions. Deceased was a most exemplary young man, and his death was heard of here with a great deal of sorrow.⁴

     Bernard (Benny) Hertel, well known Watertown resident, died early this morning at his home, 217 South Seventh Street following an illness of about six weeks. He died peacefully in his sleep. For the past few days his condition had been growing steadily more critical and he became weaker.
     Mr. Hertel was a life long resident of this community. He was born 56 years ago in the town of Watertown; a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Hertel.
     Surviving are six brothers, Joseph, Matthew, Walter and John. Watertown; Alex, Fond du Lac, and George, Fargo, N.D.
     Mr. Hertel was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church.
     The funeral will be held Monday morning from the Boyle funeral home with services in the church at 10:30 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Henry's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Saturday evening and up to the time of the funeral to pay their respects.⁵

     The marriage of Miss Clara Hertel, daughter of Mrs. Andrew Hertel, 610 Sixth street, and Mr. Samuel Slaymaker, of Beloit was solemnized in St. Henry's church at 8:30 o'clock this morning. The Rev. E. A. Hertel, of Monroe, a brother of the bride performed the ceremony. Miss Helen Hertel, a sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and Mr. Dennis McCarthy of Beloit was best man. The bride was gowned in a georgette crepe dress and wore a tulle veil and carried a bouquet of freesias. The bridesmaid was dressed in a pink georgette dress and carried a colonial bouquet of sweet peas. The bride was graduated from the Watertown High school, with the class of 1913, and attended the Milwaukee Normal school from which she was graduated in 1915. She taught school in kindergarten at Beloit since then. The groom is a paymaster with the Fairbanks Morse Co. of Beloit. After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served to relatives and intimate friends in the bride's home. The newly married couple left for a trip to the east. They will reside in Beloit. Those from out of town who attended the wedding were: Mrs. L. Slaymaker and Mrs. Fred Gardner of Beloit; Mr. and Mrs. James Youngclaus, Madison; Albert and Hugo S. Hertel, Chicago and the Rev. E. A. First Mass Is Read by Rev. E. Hertel
     The Rev. Edward Hertel of this city, a recently ordained priest of the Roman Catholic church officiated at his first mass in St. Henry's Church on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, before one of the largest assemblages and with one of the most impressive ceremonies in the history of the local congregation. A procession from the pastor's residence preceded the church the church ceremony, led by school children, followed by the mass servers and Knights of Columbus. The church was mostly beautifully decorated, the altars especially. Father Hertel was the celebrant at the high mass and he was assisted by the following clergyman: The Rev. Doctor Joseph La Boule, Milwaukee, presbyter assistant; the Rev. John Kreig, Milwaukee, deacon of mass; the Rev. James Kelly, Kilbourn, sub-deacon; Messrs. Gerald Fersst, and Fred Kreuziger, Watertown; masters of ceremony; and Herbert Littel, Watertown, thurifier.
     A former pastor of St. Henry's Church (Milwaukee) preached a splendid sermon appropriate to the occasion.
     In the ceremony symbolizing the wedding of the young priest to the church, little Miss Dorothy Molzahn acted as the bride and was attended by Helen Molzahn, flower girl and Master Frank Kellermann as flower boy. Music for the occasion was furnished by the St. Francis choir of eighteen voices.
     The Rev. Edward A. Hertel is a son of Mrs. Andrew Hertel, 610 Sixth street. He was born in Watertown and attended St. Henry's parochial school. After being graduated he entered St. Francis seminary near Milwaukee, in Sept., 1906. He received the degrees of sub deacon and deacon on April 24 and 25, 1917. He was ordained to the priesthood on Sunday, June 17.
     A reception and dinner was held at the home of the Rev. Hertel, a large number of guests being present. Those of the family and relatives from out of town were present: Messrs Hugo S. Hertel, Albert Hertel, John Hertel, Chicago; John Molzahn, Merrill; Miss Irene Hertel, Washburn; Miss Clara Hertel, Beloit; Miss Mamie Hertel, St. Paul; Miss Anna Engelhart, Ripon.
     Among the visiting priests were the Reverends A. Salick, P. Thiessen, B. Feldsecker, J. Grasser, A Gearhaul, J. Higgins, Phillip Schweitzer, F. Lipple, Milwaukee; Hugo Koester, Pardeville; J. Celebrates His First Holy Mass: Rev. Edw. A. Hertel Conducts Service: St. Henry's Church Packed With Guests and Friends Tuesday Morning.
     The Reverend Edward A. Hertel celebrated his first holy mass Tuesday morning at St. Henry's church. The church was packed with guests and friends.
     At ten o'clock the procession from the parsonage took place. The school children took part in the procession and the Knights of Columbus attended in a body. The service was a solemn high mass. The Rev. Hertel was assisted by the Rev. John Kreig , deacon; the Rev. James Kelly, sub-deacon, the Rev. Dr. Joseph La Boule, presbyter assistant, Gerald Fiesst, and Fred Kreuziger, master of ceremony, and Herbert Littel, thurifier.
     The students choir of St. Francis' Seminary sang the responses.
     According to a custom in the church symbolizing the union of the young priest with church Miss Dorothy Molzahn acted as bride. Miss Helen Molzahn was the flower girl and Master Frank Kellerman flower boy.
     Among the visiting priests were the Revs. Hugo Koester, Pardeeville, A. Salick, Milwaukee, P. Theisen, Milwaukee, Bernard Felsecker, Milwaukee, John Grasser, Milwaukee, August Gearhard, Milwaukee, Felix Sipple, Milwaukee, J. Salentine, Sun Prairie, M. Norton, Ripon, George Eilers, St. Francis, M. McEvoy, St. Francis, B. Salvrecter, St. Francis, E. Kersting, Reeseville, G. Hegeman, Madison, J. Higgins, Milwaukee, Louis Zerbes, Hartland, John Koelzer, Sheboygan, Joseph Braskey, Bristol.
     The services were very impressive. The sermon was preached by the Rev. P. Schweitzer of Bristol. Immediately after the mass, Benediction took place in lieu of evening services.
     A reception and dinner were held mother, Mrs. Andrew Hertel, 610 Sixth Street, shortly after the services.
     The Rev. Hertel was ordained at St. Francis Seminary last Sunday. He had been a student at the seminary for the last eleven years. He has not been assigned to a parish and will probably remain at home for a few weeks before taking up active duties.
     During a number of vacations he clerked at Hertel and Hoffman's Clothing Store in which his father was a partner.^10,4

Edward Hertel celebrated his silver jubilee as a priest in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in 1942 at Waterford, Racine County, Wisconsin.¹⁵

Edward Hertel witnessed the marriage of Christopher Coogan and Dorothy Catherine Molzahn on 22 May 1943 at St. Henry's Church, Watertown.^16,17,18 He celebrated the 40th anniversary of his ordination in September 1962 at Waterford, WI.¹⁹ He served as pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church before 30 September 1963 at Waterford.⁴

Edward Hertel died on 30 September 1963 at Waterford at age 72.^3,4

Fr. Hertel's Funeral to Be Thursday; Solemn Requiem At Waterford; Interment Here
     Funeral services for the Rev. Edward A. Hertel, 72, a native of Watertown and since 1935 pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at Waterford, will take place Thursday. Interment will be in St. Henry's Cemetery in Watertown.
     The pontifical requiem high mass will take place at the Waterford church at 11 o'clock Thursday morning with Auxiliary Bishop Roman R. Atkielske of Milwaukee as the celebrant.
     Father Hertel died yesterday at his parsonage home following a sudden heart attack.
          Native of City
     He was born in Watertown, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hertel, Sr. His father was for many years a prominent clothing merchant here.
     After attending St. Henry's School here, Father Hertel studied at St. Francis Seminary and was ordained a priest on June 17 1917. He celebrated his first mass at St. Henry's church.
     Father Hertel was the first chaplain at St. Charles Boys' Home in Milwaukee, serving in that post from 1922 until 1928.
     He first served as assistant pastor at St. Mary's Church in Janesville. In 1918, he was transferred to St. Victor's Church, Monroe, where he served until he became chaplain at St. Charles.
     In 1928, Father Hertel was named pastor of St. Mary's Church, Sullivan. In 1935, he became pastor of the Waterford Church.
          Brothers, Sisters Survive
     Survivors include four brothers, Hugo and John, both of Chicago, Albert, Watertown, and Andrew, Wauwatosa; and five sisters, Miss Helen, all of Watertown; Mrs. Charles F. Millmann, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Samuel Slaymaker, Beloit.
          Vigil is Tonight
     The body is at the Mealy Funeral Home in Waterford where friends may call this evening. A rosary vigil will be held there at 8:15 o'clock tonight.
     After 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the body will be at the church and there will be an all-night vigil, with parishioners participating.
     The office of the dead, a traditional part of the services for members of the Catholic clergy, will be chanted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by the pontifical requiem mass at 11 a.m.
     There will also be a special requiem mass at 8 a.m. Thursday. This will be for the school children.
     Father Hertel had many old friends in this community and always enjoyed coming here on special occasions and for visits. News of his sudden death was received here early yesterday afternoon.²⁰

     He was born on 26 February 1882.¹ He was the son of Gottfried Hertel and Frances Toupalek.¹

Edward Hertel died on 12 July 1916 at Oconomowoc, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, at age 34.¹

     Funeral services for Miss Eleanore F. Hertel, 82, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Schmutzler Funeral Home and at 10:30. a.m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond P. Dunn officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
     The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. tonight. The parish rosary will be conducted. this evening at 8 o'clock.
     
Miss Hertel passed away Saturday morning at the Watertown Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Johnson Creek April 9, 1891, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hertel.
     Miss Hertel was a music teacher and organized St.Mary's church choir in Pewaukee, where she also served as organist. She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church.
     Surviving are two sisters, Miss Flora Hertel and Miss Isabel Hertel, and one brother Carl J. of Milwaukee. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.²

     She was born. She is the daughter of Matthias J. Hertel and Catherine Frieda Engelhart.
