Berthold Juneau Husting, a member of the Milwaukee bar, was born in Mayville, Wisconsin, March 6, 1878, a son of John Pierre and Mary Magdalene (Juneau) Husting. The father was brought to America from Luxembourg by his parents in 1855. He was a jeweler by trade and during the tenure of President Cleveland he was appointed postmaster of Mayville. Subsequently he was elected city treasurer. THe mother was a daughter of Solomon Juneau, one of the pioneer residents of Milwaukee.
Berthold J. Husting received the LL.B. degree from the University of Wisconsin with the class of 1900. From his early youth he was interested in baseball and other sports. For four seasons, 1899 to 1902, he was a professional ball player, being a pitcher on the Milwaukee team when it was a member of the American League. Later he was with the Pittsburgh and Boston American League clubs and with Connie Mack's first pennant-winning Athletics of Philadelphia.
Being admitted to the bar in 1900, Mr. Husting began practicing his profession in Fond du Lac in 1902. From 1915 to 1933 he was associated with his brothers, the late United States Senator Paul O. Husting, Bonduel A. and Gustav B., under the firm style of Husting & Husting, at Mayville and Fond du Lac. In 1933 he was appointed United States district attorney for the eastern district of Wisconsin, a position which he able filled for almost twelve years. Since April, 1944, he has engaged in private practice at Mayville. He is a strong and forceful member of the bar with a comprehensive knowledge of legal principles and with analytical power that enables him to correctly apply these principles and with analytical power that enables him to apply these principles to the points at issue. His name has been associated with the trial of many important cases, among them Sharon versus the Winnebago Manufacturing Company, heard in 1910 and reported in 141 Wisconsin, 185; Theresa Village Mutual Fire Insurance Company versus the Wisconsin Central Railway, tried in 1911 and reported in 144 Wisconsin, 321; the state versus Adelmeyer (221 Wisconsin 246), tried in 1936; and the numerous and famous Horicon Marsh cases. The number of favorable verdicts he has won testify to his ability in analyzing and presenting his cause and the soundness of his deductions.
Mr. Husting was a member of the county board of Fond du Lac from 1910 to 1914 and of Dodge County from 1926 to 1931 and is president of the Dodge County Bar Association. He has always been a staunch supporter of the Democratic party and was chairman of the Democratic county committee of Fond du Lac County and in 1932 was a delegate to the national convention. He was a candidate for the office of lieutenant governor of Wisconsin in 1930 and also for the United States Congress in 1932. He has membership in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and is an honorary member of the Milwaukee W Club of the University of Wisconsin and of the Lions Club of Mayville.
Mr. Husting was married August 27, 1902, to Miss Agnes Julia Sternberger. They have three children: Suzanne Madeline, now the wife of Ralph B. Wankman; Jakob, a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Constance Agnes, now the wife of First Lieutenant John W. Carlson. The family home is in Mayville, where Mr. Husting spends much of his leisure time in gardening and during the season he greatly enjoys duck hunting.4

Berthold Juneau Husting, 70, Mayville, widely known lawyer, former United States district attorney for Eastern Wisconsin, a noted early day professional baseball player and a former resident of Fond du Lac, died unexpectedly early today at Columbia hospital, Milwaukee. He entered the hospital Wednesday for observation.
"Pete" Husting practiced law in Fond du Lac from 1992 to 1915, when he went to Mayville, where at the time of his death he was engaged in legal business with his son, John Husting.
A grandson of Solomon Juneau, the late lawyer was born March 6, 1878, at Mayville, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jan Pierre Husting. His father was a pioneer jeweler of this city. Berthold Husting attended the Mayville schools and later entered the University of Wisconsin school of law. He was admitted to the bar in 1900. He became United States district attorney in 1933 and served in that capacity for a period of 11 years.

Considered the best pitcher of his day, "Pete" Husting played professional baseball with the American and National leagues from 1900 to 1902. In 1897, he pitched for Fond du Lac when the local team played Waupun for the Wisconsin championship, hurling an 8 to 3 win for the city aggregation.
Husting's baseball career began in the late 90's when he pitched the University of Wisconsin squad to a Western conference championship in 1898. In football, he was a backfield mate of Pat O'Dea, Wisconsin's famed dropkicker. Husting became ineligible when he refused to sign a statement that he had not played professional ball with state teams during the summer. He coached the Badger nine for a year before he graduated from the law school in 1900.
Connie Mack signed Husting for a Milwaukee club in 1900 after seeing "Pete" pitch for a Fond du Lac semi-pro club. When Mack went to the Philadelphia Athletics as manager he took Husting with him. Husting won 15 games and lost six as the A's won the pennant in 1902. He also pitched for Boston in the American league and Pittsburgh in the National league before his career ended. An accident at home during the off-season forced his retirement as a player. While running across his yard at night, Husting ran into a wire clothes line, cutting his right eye so severely that he lost the sight.
An ardent hunter and fisherman and conservationist, Husting was leader in the movement to open parts of the Horicon marsh.
While a resident of the city, the Mayville lawyer served as a member of the county board and was affiliated with numerous civic groups. Active in politics, he served as a delegate to the national Democratic convention in 1932. He was president of the Dodge County Bar association and a member of Delta Tau fraternity.
Surviving Mr. Husting are his widow, the former Agnes Starberger of Mayville; his son John; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Wackman, Wauwatosa, and Mrs. John W. Carlson, Milwaukee; six grandchildren; and three brothers, Leopold Husting, Madison, Maximillian Husting, Chicago, and Gustave Husting, Madison. Two brothers, Senator Paul Husting, who was killed in a hunting accident, and B. A. Husting, a Fond Du Lac lawyer, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Koepsell funeral home, Mayville, where the body will be in state after 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery, Mayville.5

Brother of Local Residents Buried Sunday in Graceland Cemetery
Injuries recieved on Monday in an automobile accident claimed the life of Bonduel A. Husting, 61 year old Fond du Lac Attorney, a brother of Mrs. Isabella Lamoreaux, and U.S. Dist. Atty. B.J. Husting of this city.
A hemorrhage caused by a brain injury sustained when his auto and a cattle truck collided near Fond du Lac last week, was the cause of death. Mr. Husting had also sustained a fractured vertabra. For a time it appeared that he would recover, and attendants at Mercy hospital in Osh Kosh, where he was taken after the accident, felt that his condition was improving, but the hemmorhage resulted in his death.
B. A. Husting was born in Fond du Lac on June 23, 1874, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John P. Husting, pioneer residents of this city. He spent his youth in this city, attending the local schools before studying telegraphy. After working for a railroad company for several years m he studied law at the University of Wisconsin.
Upon recieving his degree, he established an office in Fond du Lac, where he had been since that time. He served three terms as district attorney in Fond du Lac county, was chairman of the county Democratic committee for several years, and hels other offices.
On June 23, 1907, he was married to Miss Kate Anderson of Eldorado, who survives with the children, Mrs. Carl W. Dyckhoff, Fond du Lac; Miss Helen Husting, of Ripon; Miss Margaret Husting, a student at Ripon college; and John Pierre. A sister, Mrs. Isabella Lamoreux of this city; four brothers, B. J. Husting, of this city; Gustav, St. Paul, Leo, Madison; Max, Souix Falls, So. Dak; and two grandchildren also remain. Two brothers, Paul and Otto preceeded him in death.
Funeral services were held on Sunday with Fountain lodge No. 26, F & A. M., in charge, at the Fond du Lac Masonic temple. The body was brought here for burial in Graceland cemetery.

Brother of Local Residents Buried Sunday in Graceland Cemetery
Injuries recieved on Monday in an automobile accident claimed the life of Bonduel A. Husting, 61 year old Fond du Lac Attorney, a brother of Mrs. Isabella Lamoreaux, and U.S. Dist. Atty. B.J. Husting of this city.
A hemorrhage caused by a brain injury sustained when his auto and a cattle truck collided near Fond du Lac last week, was the cause of death. Mr. Husting had also sustained a fractured vertabra. For a time it appeared that he would recover, and attendants at Mercy hospital in Osh Kosh, where he was taken after the accident, felt that his condition was improving, but the hemmorhage resulted in his death.
B. A. Husting was born in Fond du Lac on June 23, 1874, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John P. Husting, pioneer residents of this city. He spent his youth in this city, attending the local schools before studying telegraphy. After working for a railroad company for several years m he studied law at the University of Wisconsin.
Upon recieving his degree, he established an office in Fond du Lac, where he had been since that time. He served three terms as district attorney in Fond du Lac county, was chairman of the county Democratic committee for several years, and hels other offices.
On June 23, 1907, he was married to Miss Kate Anderson of Eldorado, who survives with the children, Mrs. Carl W. Dyckhoff, Fond du Lac; Miss Helen Husting, of Ripon; Miss Margaret Husting, a student at Ripon college; and John Pierre. A sister, Mrs. Isabella Lamoreux of this city; four brothers, B. J. Husting, of this city; Gustav, St. Paul, Leo, Madison; Max, Souix Falls, So. Dak; and two grandchildren also remain. Two brothers, Paul and Otto preceeded him in death.
Funeral services were held on Sunday with Fountain lodge No. 26, F & A. M., in charge, at the Fond du Lac Masonic temple. The body was brought here for burial in Graceland cemetery.
